About Back in SEASon

Gabe - Vice President of Student Life

Hi! I'm the real Gabe Guo, and I'm a sophomore from Buffalo majoring in CS. I love MCU movies (especially Iron Man), fried chicken, unicorns, and sunsets. In the past year as Health & Wellness Representative, I've had the great pleasure of helping pass emergency P/D/F, expanding accessibility of dining options, and spearheading the t-shirt design challenge and giveaway. I'm running for VP of Student Life because I believe that every single member of our SEAS family should optimize both their academic performance and fun times at Columbia!

Angel - Student Body President

Hey everyone, I'm Angel Mancera, I'm originally from Venezuela and I'm a Junior studying Computer Science with a minor in Economics. Throughout my years at Columbia, I've had the opportunity and enjoyment of participating in the Engineering Student Council and spearheading initiatives that have led us through challenging times and brought the community closer together. As a VP of Policy, I've led a magnificent team that brought us the PDF option in previous semesters and is currently working to make it possible for this and future semesters. I look forward to keeping working on the policies that will make a better Columbia experience for all of us!

Matt - Vice President of Policy

Hey everyone, I'm Matthew Wahl, and I am a junior studying biomedical engineering. I am originally from Bitburg, Germany, but I have lived in 3 different countries and 6 different states throughout my life. Throughout my time at Columbia, I have had the opportunity to serve in the Engineering Student Council as both Class of 2023 Representative and Vice President of Student Life, spearheading and aiding initiatives such as the PDF policy, transfer inclusion initiatives, Explore NYC Initiative, and SEAS Gala Cruise. I want to promote initiatives such as a permanent PDF policy, FGLI Fundraising, Student MetroCards, Mental health advocacy, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and more. I look forward to helping to create a better, more supportive, and more inclusive Columbia. My prior involvement in leadership within ESC and other organizations, my unique perspective having lived in multiple different countries and states throughout my life, and my determination make me a strong candidate for ESC Vice President of Policy.

Shomik - Vice President of Communications

Hey! I'm a junior from Houston, TX majoring in computer science, and am the incumbent Vice President of Communications, previously serving in the role from 2021-22. I've also previously served on ESC as the Professional Development and Alumni Affairs Representative from 2020-21. As part of the past two years, I've had the privilege of both leading and contributing to vital initiatives, including PDF policies, the "Off the Record" alumni mentorship program, the "ESC Start" peer mentorship program, and more. I look forward to continuing to give back to our ESC community through a second term as ESC's Vice President of Communications.

Our Vision

What we've done:

We're Back in SEASon, a party composed of current, incumbent, and committed ESC members. In the past, we have collectively played instrumental roles in ESC by collaborating with student organizations and faculty to approve key policies for our constituents and hold fun events to boost our campus spirit! Some of our favorite ones were: creating the SEAS Gala, initiating Explore NYC, organizing Meet a Fellow Engineer, and passing ... (drumrolls, please) the Fall 2021 P/D/F!

What we'll do:

  1. Policies:
    • P/D/F: Tirelessly advocating for a PERMANENT P/D/F policy, in which SEAS students would have two floating P/D/Fs that can be used on any course in any semester.
    • Student Metrocard Initiative: Students from disadvantaged backgrounds will have access to NYC by means of free MetroCards provided by ESC.
    • Transfer Inclusion Initiative: We'll work to organize a special NSOP, exclusive acceptance packages, and days on campus for transfer students.
    • Mental/General Health Initiatives: We strive to communicate with administrators to improve the current mental health services and support to students and to improve accessibility.
  2. Events you will actually go to: Rooftop formal (Bridgerton-style ball), SEAS Gala Cruise - 2023 Edition, Explore NYC Initiative 2.0, puppy day, cultural fairs, and lots and lots of free food!
  3. DEI: We are committed to fighting for diversity, equity, and inclusion with forward-thinking policies like an FGLI fundraising initiative, mentorship programs, support for minority and cultural organization events, and a cultural celebration day.

Thank you, and we're so excited for us to thrive together.

-Gabe, Shomik, Matt, Chloe, and Angel
